One Laptop Per Child

Mission

OLPC, or the One Laptop Per Child Association, Inc. is a non-profit organization aiming to empower the children of developing countries to learn by providing one connected laptop to every school-age child.

The reason why this organization was created is because technology is always growing. Everyday, it grows and in developing countries, people can't catch up with all of it. They do not have the resources and money to educate the youth. The organization gives low-cost, low-powered laptops to children all across the world so that they be educated, connect with people around the world, and create a better future for themselves.

The Laptop

The laptops given to these children across the world are no ordinary laptops. They are specially designed for this organization and are called the OLPC XO-1 Laptop. It's low powered, small, durable, efficient, and low manufacturing cost at a price of around $100 each. Each laptop consists of a camera, microphone, Wi-Fi, and a stylus/touch pad. The laptop can be opened up as a normal laptop or the screen can be turned around for a viewing mode, covering the keyboard.

There is also a future design for the laptop called the OLPC XO-3 laptop and is scheduled to be released in 2012. It resembles a tablet computer and is all touchscreen. It is hoping to be released at the same price as the orignal XO-1 laptop, around $100 and is currently being designed.

My View

I think this is a great organization. As we get older, technology will always be moving and evolving. Developing countries may not have the resources to give their generation of kids the money to have an education like we do here in America, so this is such a great cause. We are so fortunate to have simple luxuries like iPods, laptops, computers, and other electronics while others in the world aren't even able to have a tv. With the help of these laptops, better education can be given to the kids and it also allows them to connect with the world and people.
