(: Special Olympics is where athletes with intellectual disabilities celebrate and are celebrated for their accomplishments. It's often the first time that our athletes have truly taken center stage and been recognized as individuals.With special focus on creating and enabling opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities, Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver was ahead of her time when she began her advocacy work long before the first Special Olympics Games in 1968. After Mrs. Shriver died in 2009, her name was attached to a measure now before the U.S. Congress to support numerous programs operated by Special Olympics and Best Buddies International.
